Recently named winner of the Texas-MTNA Young Artist Woodwind Competition and University of North Texas Concerto Competition, saxophonist Kyle Stec is currently a Teaching Fellow at the University of North Texas, where he is pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree. As a Teaching Fellow, Kyle teaches applied saxophone lessons to a studio of undergraduate music majors and coaches quartets. In addition to his work at UNT, Kyle also maintains a saxophone studio at Marcus High School in Flower Mound, TX. Formerly, Kyle has taught for the renowned Carmel Marching Greyhounds (IN), 2005 BOA National Champions and at the Bands of America Summer Symposium (2004-2007).
As a performer, Kyle has premiered works at North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial conferences in Georgia (2010), South Carolina (2008), Iowa (2006), and North Carolina (2004). He has twice been asked to give anthem performances at the DCI Midwestern Championships (2004, 2006). As a winner of the university’s Concerto Competition, he will perform as soloist with the UNT Symphony Orchestra. At UNT, Kyle served as saxophone section leader of the North Texas Wind Symphony, under the direction of Eugene Migliaro Corporon, recording numerous CD’s with the ensemble. An advocate of new music, Kyle performs with NOVA, a contemporary music ensemble, and frequently collaborates with composers from the Center for Experimental Music and Intermedia. He has performed in masterclasses with renowned saxophonists like Eugene Rousseau, Griffin Campbell, and Nicolas Prost. Kyle is a recipient of the Ed and Julia Hodges Memorial Scholarship, UNT Saxophone Scholarship, ISSMA Scholarship and Mary B. Smith Scholarship for the Performing Arts.
Kyle completed his Master of Music in saxophone with a secondary field in music education in 2009 at the University of North Texas, and earned a Bachelor of Music in saxophone at Indiana University in 2007. Primary teachers include, Dr. Eric Nestler, Dr. Otis Murphy, and Dennis Sizemore.
